How Long to Cook a Toastie (Every Method and Filling)
A cheese toastie takes 3–4 minutes in a preheated standard electric toastie maker, 4–5 minutes in a deep fill model, about 2–3 minutes in a microwave toastie maker (800W), 6–8 minutes in a frying pan and 8–10 minutes in an air fryer at 180°C. Heavier or colder fillings need 1–2 minutes more.
Quick answer: Electric sandwich toaster: 3–4 min. Deep fill: 4–5 min. Panini press: 3–5 min. Microwave toastie maker: 2–3 min at 800W. Pan: 3–4 min a side. Air fryer: 180°C for 8–10 min. Oven: 200°C (fan 180°C) for 10–14 min. Campfire iron: 3–6 min. Always preheat, and judge by colour and melt rather than the clock alone.

Electric toastie maker times by filling
For a standard sealed sandwich toaster. Add roughly 1 minute for a deep fill machine.
| Filling | Time | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Grated cheese only | 3–4 min | Golden bread, cheese bubbling at the seams |
| Ham and cheese | 3½–4½ min | Cheese fully melted around the ham |
| Cheese and onion | 4 min | Thinly sliced or grated onion softens in time |
| Cheese and tomato | 3½–4 min | Steam slows; pat tomato dry first |
| Baked beans and cheese | 4–5 min | Beans piping hot in the centre |
| Tuna melt | 4 min | Tuna mix hot, cheese stretchy |
| Leftover chilli or curry (reheated) | 4–5 min | Filling should be steaming hot throughout |
| Sweet (Nutella, banana, jam) | 2½–3 min | Sugar burns quickly; check early |
| Frozen bread | Add 30–60 sec | Extra steam at first |

What changes the cooking time
Preheating
The biggest factor. A machine that has only been on for a minute can add 2 minutes to the cook and still give paler, soggier bread. Wait for the ready light, usually 3–5 minutes after plugging in.
Wattage and plate depth
Most UK sandwich toasters sit roughly between 700W and 900W. Lower wattage and deeper plates both mean longer cooks, as does a big 4-slice machine running at a similar wattage.
Bread
Thick-cut, wholemeal, seeded and sourdough slices take 30–60 seconds longer than medium white. Brioche and other sweet enriched breads brown faster because of the sugar and butter in the dough. Our best bread for toasties guide goes through each.
Filling temperature and quantity
Cold fillings straight from the fridge, or big piles of them, slow everything down. Grate cheese rather than slicing it, and take dense fillings out of the fridge 10 minutes early.
Fat on the outside
Mayonnaise browns slightly faster and more evenly than butter. Dry bread with no fat takes longer and colours patchily. See butter or mayo for toasties.
How to tell a toastie is done
- The steam coming from the machine slows to a trickle.
- The bread is evenly deep golden, not pale or blotchy.
- Cheese is bubbling at the sealed edges or visibly melted when you lift a corner.
- Leftovers and meat-based fillings are steaming hot right through. If you are reheating cooked leftovers, make sure they were piping hot before they went in, as a 4-minute toast may not fully reheat a fridge-cold dense filling.
Watch out: A sealed toastie traps heat. Molten cheese, beans and sugary fillings can be much hotter than the outside suggests. Let it stand for 1–2 minutes before eating, and longer for children.
FAQs
Why does my toastie take longer than the manual says?
Usually the machine wasn't fully preheated, the filling was very cold, or there was too much of it. Low-wattage machines and deep fill plates also run slower than the figures in most recipes.
Can you overcook a toastie in a toastie maker?
Yes. Past about 6 minutes in a standard machine the bread goes from golden to dark and dry, and cheese that leaks onto the plates burns. Check at 3 minutes and add time in 30-second steps.
How long do you cook a toastie on each side in a pan?
About 3–4 minutes for the first side over medium-low heat, then 2–3 minutes for the second, pressing down throughout. A lid on the first side helps the cheese melt.
Do you need to flip a toastie in a toastie maker?
No. Electric toastie makers heat both plates at once, so there is no need to turn the sandwich. You only flip in a pan, air fryer, under the grill or in a camping iron.
