How to Make a Toastie in an Air Fryer

An air fryer makes a very good toastie: butter the outsides, cook at 180°C for about 4 minutes, flip, then give it another 3–4 minutes until golden and the cheese has melted. The one real problem is the fan lifting the top slice, so you need to pin it down with a cocktail stick, a small rack or a sheet of foil.

Quick answer: 180°C, 4 minutes, flip, 3–4 minutes more (7–8 minutes total). Basket-style air fryers usually need no preheat; if yours is a large oven-style model, preheat for 3 minutes. Weigh the top slice down so the fan can't blow it away.

Recipe: Air fryer cheese toastie

  • Prep 5 min
  • Cook 7–8 min
  • Makes 1 toastie
  • About 490 kcal

Ingredients

  • 2 slices medium-sliced white bread (or bloomer, about 1.5cm thick)
  • 50g mature cheddar, coarsely grated
  • 10g salted butter, softened (or 1 tbsp mayonnaise)
  • 1 tsp finely grated parmesan, optional, for a crisp crust
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 2 cocktail sticks, or a small metal trivet that fits your basket

Method

  1. Spread the butter thinly right to the edges on one side of each slice. Press the parmesan into the buttered sides if using.
  2. Lay one slice butter-side down on a board, pile on the cheddar, keeping a 1cm gap from the crusts, season with pepper, and top with the second slice butter-side up.
  3. Push two cocktail sticks diagonally through the sandwich from corner to corner, so they hold the top slice down without poking out of the sides by more than 1cm.
  4. Place the toastie in the basket (no preheat needed for most basket models) and cook at 180°C for 4 minutes.
  5. Open the drawer, flip the toastie with a silicone spatula, and cook for another 3–4 minutes until both sides are deep golden and the cheese is bubbling at the edges.
  6. Rest for 1 minute in the basket, remove the cocktail sticks, then cut diagonally and serve.

Why the air fryer works (and where it doesn't)

An air fryer is a small, powerful convection oven. Hot air at 180°C crisps buttered bread fast, and because it circulates all the way round, both sides brown at once rather than just the side touching a hot plate. The result is close to a frying pan toastie: crisp, flat, with a soft centre.

What it can't do is seal the edges. A sealed toastie maker crimps the crusts into a pocket, which is what lets you pack in beans or loose fillings. In an air fryer the sandwich stays open at the sides, so keep fillings firm and within the bread. If you want the full comparison on speed, energy use and result, see toastie maker vs air fryer.

Temperatures and times by air fryer type

Air fryer typeTemperatureTimeNotes
Single basket, 3–5 litre180°C4 min + 3–4 minNo preheat; fits one square-cut toastie
Dual basket (e.g. Ninja dual zone)180°C4 min + 3–4 minOne toastie per drawer; use match/sync to cook two

Models vary by 20–30% in real output, so check your first toastie at the 6-minute mark. For timings across every other method, see how long to cook a toastie.

Keeping the top slice down

Air fryer fans are strong, and a loose slice of bread weighs almost nothing. Options, in order of how well they work:

  • Cocktail sticks: two pushed through diagonally. Cheap and reliable; use wooden ones and keep the ends inside the basket's footprint.
  • A small trivet or rack: a metal rack that fits inside the basket, set directly on top of the toastie, works like a sandwich press. This also gives a flatter, more even crust.
  • Foil cover for the first half: loosely tuck a piece of foil over the top for the first 4 minutes, then remove it to crisp. Never leave loose foil or parchment in an empty basket, as it can be drawn into the element.
  • Cheese as glue: a little cheese grated right to the edges melts and holds the sandwich together after a couple of minutes, which is why the flip works.

Watch out: don't put baking paper in the basket while preheating, and don't spray aerosol cooking oil directly onto non-stick baskets; it can build up and damage the coating. Butter the bread instead.

Butter, mayo or nothing?

Unlike a non-stick toastie maker, an air fryer needs fat on the outside to brown properly; dry bread just turns pale and crunchy like toast. Butter gives the best flavour; mayonnaise spreads straight from the fridge and browns slightly more evenly. The trade-offs are covered in butter or mayo for toasties.

Other ways to make it

For a side-by-side of all of them, read how to make a toastie without a toastie maker.

Variations that suit the air fryer

  • Ham and cheese: one slice of ham folded to fit inside the crusts; same timing. Full recipe: ham and cheese toastie.
  • Cheese and onion: 1 finely sliced spring onion mixed into the cheese.
  • Tuna melt: drain the tuna very well; wet fillings steam the bread. See the tuna melt toastie.
  • Croque-style: add a thin spread of Dijon inside and a sprinkle of gruyère on top for the last 2 minutes, cocktail sticks removed.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the flip: the underside sits against the basket and stays paler.
  • Too hot: at 200°C the crust burns before 50g of cheese melts. Stay at 170–180°C.
  • Overfilling: more than about 60g of cheese runs out the open sides onto the basket.
  • Thin cheese slices straight from the fridge: grated cheese melts faster; slices need a minute longer.

FAQs

Do I need to preheat the air fryer for a toastie?

Most basket air fryers heat up in under a minute, so preheating makes little difference. Larger oven-style air fryers benefit from a 3-minute preheat so the first side browns properly.

Can I make two toasties at once?

Only if they sit in a single layer without overlapping. Most 4–5 litre baskets fit one; dual-drawer models fit one per drawer. Stacking them means the bottom one steams.

Is an air fryer toastie cheaper than using a toastie maker?

Usually not by much either way. An air fryer draws more power (often 1,400–1,700W) for longer, so a toastie maker tends to use slightly less electricity per toastie. The figures are in our toastie maker electricity cost guide.

Can I use a silicone liner?

Yes, a silicone liner catches cheese drips and makes cleaning easier, though the base browns a little less. Give the second side an extra minute if you use one.
